This core curriculum aims to introduce students to the important modes of thought and reasoning, including social analysis, ethical reasoning, literature, civilization studies, the arts, science, and mathematics.

    • Each student will take 1-2 courses, during their first or second year

    • Introduction to Ethics

      • Introduction to Bioethics

      • Ethics of Humanitarian Intervention

  1. Literature, Civilization Studies, and the Arts

    • Each student will take three courses, two during their first year and one during their second year

      1. Literature

        • World Literature I & II

        • Arabian Nights in Literature & Culture

      2. Civilization Studies

        • Introduction to South Asian History I & II

        • Modern Asian History

        • Asian Religion through Art

      3. Dramatic, Visual, and Musical Arts

        • Photography


  1. Natural Sciences and Mathematics

    • Each student will take three courses over the course of their first and second year: two courses in the natural sciences and one course in mathematics, or two courses in mathematics and one course in the natural sciences.

    • Natural Sciences

    2. For students pursuing a major in the sciences.

  1. Writing and Rhetoric Seminars

    • Each student will take two seminars during their first year

Intensive writing and rhetoric seminars built around literary, philosophical, historical, artistic, political, social, and scientific themes.

  1. Regional Challenges
    • Each student will take one course, during their second year

These are courses that focus on major regional problems and involve students in the region as a living laboratory as part of the course.

      • Environmental Challenges in Asia
      • Public Health Challenges in Asia

      • Gender, Peace, and Conflict in Asia

      • Urban Challenges and Poverty in Asia

      • Information and Communications Technology for Development
